7001 Farnam Residence

The addition at 7001 Farnam provides a new master suite for the owners of the mid-century ranch style home. The program consisted of creating an private escape for the parents and framing a new court that can be used for recreation for the children. The design approach focused on complimenting the existing architecture and materiality by connecting very lightly to the existing house. A small glass breezeway provides a light connection to the house without interrupting the limestone exterior or roof line. From there, a simple box forms a new master suite and bath.
The addition is clad in black stained cedar and weathering steel to reflect the basic zones of the addition. The weathering steel plane is pulled away from the main body of the house by adding windows that provide indirect natural light for the small reading area of the bedroom.

During different times of the day the light will penetrate spaces and create a sense of movement. At night the spaces will be unveiled to expose the lightweight steel framing and provide identity markers for tenants and users. The exterior experience reveals how the additive volumes will identify program with an overlapping material language which highlights the lightweight connections of the large scale masses.
